Backstory
Josiah Monaghan, born in 1842 to Irish immigrants in Pittsburgh, grew up under the harsh tutelage of his ruthless father, a mine foreman. With a sharp mind for business and a talent for manipulation, Josiah used his education and ambition to build an industrial empire. By 1860, he took over a small West Virginia mining operation, thriving during the Civil War as coal demand surged. Ruthlessly expanding his holdings, he implemented a company-store system, trapping workers in debt to maximize profits.
By 1870, Josiah’s Monaghan Mining Company dominated Appalachia, with Shadewood Hollow as a key asset. Projecting a facade of care for his workers, he maintained control through economic coercion, enforcers, and a disregard for safety. Despite his wealth and power, Josiah was deeply superstitious, secretly consulting Maggie Finch for charms against rumored supernatural threats.
The arrival of labor organizer Eleanor “Nellie” Daws in the 1890s threatened his empire. As she rallied miners against unsafe conditions and low wages, Josiah responded with intimidation, propaganda, and bribes. Her growing influence, coupled with escalating accidents and eerie phenomena, unnerved him. Despite warnings from locals, Josiah intensified mining operations, further angering the land and its inhabitants.
By the 1890s, Josiah was both a symbol of industrial success and a tyrant feared in Shadewood Hollow. His relentless ambition pushed his empire to the brink, forcing him to confront the rebellion of the miners and the supernatural forces he could no longer dismiss.
