Backstory
Born in 14th-century Bordeaux, France, Germaine Rousseau was the youngest son of a prosperous winemaker, raised in privilege and devoted to philosophy, music, and diplomacy. His human life took a fateful turn during the chaos of the Hundred Years’ War when he fell in love with Isabelle, a powerful vampire who offered him immortality. Transformed by her bite, Germaine gained eternal life but was forced to sever ties with his family. After a century under Isabelle's guidance, she mysteriously vanished, leaving him to navigate the complexities of vampiric existence alone.
Over centuries, Germaine’s diplomatic skills earned him respect among supernaturals, leading to his role as a founding member of The Congregation and a key architect of The Covenant. In the late 17th century, he was chosen to lead the newly established American Congregation at Solomon House in Louisiana, where he skillfully managed the volatile dynamics of the New World’s supernatural population. Balancing the ambitions of peers like Jonathan Phelps and Katarina Moreau, he maintained order while protecting the veil of secrecy.
Though celebrated as a leader, Germaine carries a deep loneliness, having outlived countless allies and loved ones. His calm exterior conceals doubts about The Covenant’s rigidity, particularly its ban on interspecies unions, which he views as outdated. He monitors the Appalachian Highlands, including Shadewood Hollow, seeing it as a proving ground for the resilience of The Covenant amidst growing unrest among younger supernaturals.
Committed to preserving balance, Germaine envisions a future where tradition and progress coexist. While loyal to The Covenant, he remains aware that change may be inevitable to secure the supernatural world’s survival.
