Backstory
Born in 1817 in a bustling eastern port city, Ezekiel Kane grew up captivated by urban life, drawn to the energy of machines and crowds despite his family’s emphasis on rural magical traditions. By fifteen, he began experimenting with the magical resonance of cities, discovering how urban environments amplified or altered his spells. His innovative approach, blending magic with human engineering, alarmed conservative family members but earned him recognition among progressive witches.
In his twenties, Ezekiel moved to New York City, immersing himself in both magical and industrial circles. He pioneered urban spellwork, incorporating elements like cobblestones and lamplight into his magic. While respected by progressives, his bold experiments, including a warding spell that disrupted a marketplace, drew reprimands from The Congregation for risking exposure.
In 1860, Ezekiel joined the American Congregation as a witch representative. At Solomon House, his progressive ideas often clashed with traditionalist Abigail Hawthorne, but his ingenuity solidified his role as a key figure. Now, Ezekiel champions the evolution of magic to align with industrial progress, arguing that adaptation is essential for the supernatural world’s survival.
