Backstory
Eleanor "Nellie" Daws, born in 1865 to Irish immigrant parents in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, grew up in poverty and witnessed her father’s death in a mill accident at 12. This tragedy ignited her lifelong fight against industrial greed. Self-taught and driven, Nellie began organizing labor movements by her late teens, inspired by mentor Mary Givens, a seasoned labor organizer. Arrested multiple times and labeled a troublemaker, Nellie’s reputation as a fierce advocate for workers’ rights spread across Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia.
In 1890, she arrived in Shadewood Hollow, drawn by the plight of miners trapped in debt and dangerous conditions under the Monaghan Mining Company. Despite propaganda and threats, Nellie united the town through secret meetings and protests, finding allies in figures like Sammy Crane and Reverend Amos Green. Skeptical of the supernatural whispers surrounding the mines, she nonetheless respected insights from mystics like Maggie Finch and Running Deer.
Nellie’s mission in Shadewood Hollow was about more than fair wages—it was about dignity and survival. She’s become a symbol of defiance, risking everything to challenge an oppressive system and proving that even in the face of overwhelming odds, collective resistance could spark change.
