Backstory
Awi Asga, "Running Deer," was born in 1827, marked by his Cherokee heritage and the vision of a leaping stag at sunrise. Raised within the Shadowfang Tribe, a Cherokee clan bound by an ancient pact granting them the ability to transform into animal-like forms, Awi grew into a shaman and warrior, mastering both spiritual and martial traditions.
The Trail of Tears in the late 1830s devastated the tribe. Using their supernatural gifts, the Shadowfangs evaded removal, retreating deeper into the Appalachians at great cost. Awi took on leadership after his father’s death, vowing to protect their sacred grounds and uphold their covenant with the land.
Under his guidance, the Shadowfangs became secretive guardians of Shadewood Hollow’s forests, quietly sabotaging the Monaghan Mining Company’s destructive activities. Awi’s cunning and knowledge of the wilderness made him a whispered legend among settlers, but his position was precarious. The miners’ encroachment and the anger of restless forest spirits threatened the tribe’s survival.
By 1890, Awi faced pressure from younger tribe members demanding open conflict, but he urged caution, relying on unity, cunning, and their deep bond with the land. As leader of the Shadowfangs, Awi Asga remained a bridge between worlds, dedicated to preserving his people’s legacy and adapting to a changing, hostile world.
